D Day 80 - 6th June 2024

Published: 09 March 2024

In 1944 Operation Overlord saw around 4,000 ships and landing craft set down about 132,500 troops on five Normandy beaches in an action that would bring about the liberation of north-west Europe from Nazi occupation. The bravery and sacrifice of those people in securing the peace and freedom we enjoy today will be observed by the lighting of beacons around the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories. I hope your community will join us. We are asking villages, towns, cities and organisations of all sizes to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day by lighting a beacon at 9.15 pm on 6th June 2024, in celebration of the ‘light of peace’ that emerged out of the darkness of war.” Bruno Peek CVO OBE OPR, Pageantmaster.

Laughton-en-le-Morthen Parish Council has taken the decision to join in and mark this historic event with the lighting of the Parish Beacon. It is to be relocated to the Village Hall car park and will be lit with lights rather than fire. The Parish Council has booked Maltby Miners Welfare Band for the occasion and there will be stalls at the village hall, with the Beacon lighting at 9.15pm. Pie and Peas will be available for purchase, as well as a selection of cakes, tea and coffee. If anyone would like to work with Councillors in organising the event, please contact the clerk. Please keep an eye out for further information.
